THE LASER SIGHT
AS A TRAINING AID

The laser sight opens new possibilities for teaching and practicing the basic techniques of aim, holds and squeeze. These three critical elements of marksmanship can be practiced and even scored separately. The laser sight projects a small, visible red dot that shows both instructor and trainee exactly where the weapon is aiming and reveals undesirable movement from faulty trigger squeeze or hold. This immediate feedback on performance is the key to rapid learning.

Training with the laser sight saves money because the techniques of aim, hold and squeeze can be taught and practiced without having to fire live ammunition to evaluate performance. It also saves range time since much training and practice can be done with small targets on the wall of a classroom or other convenient indoor location.

Recommended uses of the laser sight as a training aid include the following:

When working on trigger squeeze, keep the laser activated throughout the squeeze. Any movement off-line is vividly displayed by the movement of the laser dot on the target.
To work on a steady hold, again keep the laser activated. By observing the movement of the laser spot, both instructor and student can see how steady the weapon is being held.
When teaching or practicing aiming a pistol from the natural point and other positions, or a rifle or shotgun from the hip or underarm position, it is easy to determine the shooters accuracy by then activating the laser. Once more, this does not require live ammunition.
For teaching the techniques of target acquisition, especially the quick reactions required for rapid and accurate shooting in combat, the laser sight works very effectively on the range with pop-up targets.

In summary, the special value of the laser sight as a training aid is that the visible laser dot provides the immediate feedback required to work systematically on the fundamentals of aim, hold and squeeze without the expense of firing live ammunition. The laser sight is not limited to its use as a training aid, but also is an essential tool during combat.

WHY USE A LASER SIGHT

The person equipped with a laser sight simply moves the red laser dot onto the target then fires. It is no longer necessary to close one eye and use the conventional sights. Liberation from the bondage of conventional sights greatly increases shooting speed and accuracy. The laser sight offers the following specific advantages:

You can shoot from the hip with the same accuracy as from the shoulder, but much faster. In any combat situation when you are on the move, rather than behind cover, first round accuracy while firing quickly from the hip may spell the difference between life and death.
With the weapon at the hip or underarm position, you can track a moving far more effectively than when peering down conventional sights. You can aim accurately in dim light when it is difficult or impossible to see your conventional sights.
The laser sight performs beautifully in conjunction with Night Vision. You gain a psychological advantage over your opponent by putting the laser spot in the target and making certain that the target is aware of it. Seeing the dot, the target knows exactly where the bullet will hit him. Since there is no need to raise the weapon to eye level, you retain unobstructed peripheral vision while you fire.
You can train new shooters in marksmanship with conventional sights faster and with less expense. The laser provides an independent check on where the weapon is aimed at any given time. Experienced shooters will also gain from this experience.
